Three Ways To Improve Your Company Culture (And Why It Matters)

Jan 18th, 2017

Company culture matters today. The most successful companies are leveraging their human capital, realizing that happy employees mean productive and loyal employees. Culture works hand in hand with a company’s core values and mission to positively impact productivity and the bottom line.

Carefully crafted company culture reinforces the guidelines and expectations of how a company does business. Transparency is a real thing rather than a buzzword. Culture is the platform for employee recruitment, retention, engagement, and collaboration, as well as providing a visible framework for stakeholders and partners.

One of the reasons that company culture is moving to the forefront is the number of millennials making up the work force, more than 53 million, making 1 in 3 employees a millennial. They are a different kind of employee than the generations before them. Gone are the days of a “company man” that begins and ends his career with the same company. Employees today are more discerning about employer benefits, flexibility, and culture. They want a positive fit that works with their lives in tandem.

Company culture is an important and smart way for companies to compete for top talent.

Here are three ways to improve your company culture and start making a difference today.

Open Door Policy and More

Communication from the top to all levels of an organization is vital. Leaders and leadership teams need to not only have an open door policy, but also set the standard for effective communication, inviting employee feedback, and collaboration. Communicating vision and inspiration to those executing it is a mandatory skill for top leaders. A company that does not rely on good communication may experience high employee turnover and a lapse in revenues due to disconnected employees and an unformulated mission.

Hire according to a fit in your Culture

Once the company culture has been established and is working positively, create hiring guidelines that support the culture. New team members that embrace the company philosophy will make faster transitions and require less time to mesh with current team members. From interview to onboarding process, your company culture should be informing the new candidate process.

Ready, Set, Retreat!

You might be surprised at how often your employees don’t know much about one another. Team building brings everyone together (out of the work environment!) and into a space of fun, creativity, and empowerment. A corporate retreat is good for business and provides time and space for brainstorming, personal and team growth, and out-of-office relaxation.
